About Apopka FL

Apopka, Fl has a unique history beginning with the indigenous people who are believed to have populated the area for several thousand years, residing on the pristine shores of what is now known as Lake Apopka. In the 19th century, the area was an active Native American settlement. However, especially after the Civil War, settlers displaced the native people and began to shape Apopka into the city it is today.

Apopka, Florida is home to “The Lodge,” which played a large role in the city’s development. Founded in 1857, it is the oldest Masonic Lodge in Florida that has been in continuous use. The town grew up around this important, and now historic, site. When the city was incorporated in 1882, it’s limits were drawn one mile in all directions from The Lodge. Agriculture has also been a significant part of Apopka’s history. In the early 1900s, fern growing was a major enterprise, giving rise to an early nickname: Fern City. Later the City of Apopka would call itself The Indoor Foliage Capital of the World because of its thriving of houseplant growing industry. Many nurseries and greenhouses still line the outskirts of the city, although agricultural business no longer plays the large role it once did. In recent years, agricultural land has been slated for new development that includes the building of a mixed-use town center with restaurants and eateries, a multi-million dollar hospital, and new single families homes.
