About Colonialtown South Orlando FL

Colonialtown, Florida, is divided into two distinct neighborhoods — Colonialtown North and Colonialtown South, which share a common border along East Colonial Drive. Most of the residential homes in Colonialtown South were built during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, prior to the end of World War II. This neighborhood is truly special because it is a relatively intact example of “traditional development” in Florida. This kind of development took place before the GI’s returned home from the war and huge swaths of farmland were converted into tract housing. Another distinctive feature of this area is the proximity to the stunning Harry P. Leu Gardens, about 50 acres of lakes and naturally landscaped grounds and trails.

Formally-styled homes that were built in the first half of the 20th Century are the hallmark of this area. Other popular styles throughout the neighborhood include Colonial, Mediterranean, and Tudor Revival, as well as Mission and Prairie homes. Because this area is such an important part of the history of Orlando, homeowners are required to obtain approval from the Historic Preservation Board before they make changes to their homes’ exteriors.
