About Clermont FL
Unlike the many planned communities in and around the Orlando metropolitan area, Clermont Florida is a real town with real history. The city was founded in 1884 and incorporated in 1916, becoming a primarily citrus-growing town in the 1920s. At one time, it was considered to be among the top citrus-growing communities in Florida. When cold weather destroyed many of the citrus farms in 1980s, and as the groves became more valuable as land for residential home sites, Clermont became a largely residential. However, many of the nice features that once defined the area still exist today, including a charming downtown area, historic buildings, mature trees, and gorgeous natural surroundings. The Florida Citrus Tower, a defining architectural feature built in 1956, still stands.
